Addressing School Mental Health Challenges

Recruitment, hiring, and retention in school mental health have been challenging for years and were further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools and community-based organizations face increasing turnover, leading to gaps in care, budget shortfalls, and other costs associated with staff attrition.

The MOMENTUM Residency is a comprehensive professional development program  designed to tackle these challenges. By recruiting and training a diverse cohort of diverse and multilingual clinicians, MOMENTUM is building the capacity for equitable, culturally attuned care in schools across Washington, DC.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Graduate of an accredited Masters in Social Work or Masters in Counseling Program AND obtain a DC license (LGSW or LGPC) by July 2026.  
  • Commit to a 1 year employment placement in a DC Public or Public Charter School or Community-Based Organization
  • Commit to attending The MOMENTUM Residency orientation activities and professional development activities throughout the course of the year:  Kick off training week mid-late August 2026.
  • Complete application packet and references by May 5, 2026
  • Complete additional application materials for employment sites as requested over the course of the application period – May 2026.
  • Be licensed and eligible for employment in Washington, DC by July 2026
  • Yes. We have 8 slots for the 2026-2027 school year
  • You will have a virtual interview to determine your fit for MOMENTUM.
  • Acceptance into MOMENTUM does not guarantee employment as there are limited placement opportunities and the process is competitive.
  • Make yourself available for interviews for the various employment opportunities.  2 Types of Employers:
    • 4 residents placed and employed by Mary’s Center in one of their existing partnership schools
    • 4 residents placed and employed by one of 4 Public Charter Schools, to be announced in May
  • Stay in close communication and pay attention to deadlines if you’d like to be considered for placement.
  • Yes. Preliminary interviews will occur during a 2-4 week period after the application deadline.

Yes, however please note that placement priority will be given to employers who have firmly committed to hiring a resident.

The annual salary for MOMENTUm residents is $70,000 annually plus benefits offered by the employer.
